In Almaty, a baby girl has been born—a first for Kazakhstan—thanks to mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT).

The essence of mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) is to transfer the mother’s egg-cell nucleus into a donor egg from which the nucleus has been removed, using the donor’s cytoplasm and mitochondria to support further development. After fertilization, the parents have a child who is genetically their own. This technology has been used in Kazakhstan for the first time. Worldwide, only around 30 children have been born using this technology.

The 43-year-old mother went through a difficult journey involving several unsuccessful IVF cycles. Thanks to the technique’s creator, Shukhrat Mitalipov, a former compatriot who is now Director of the Center for Embryonic and Gene Therapy at Oregon Health & Science University in the United States, as well as Academician V. N. Lokshin and his team at the PERSONA International Center for Clinical Reproductology, the woman was able to become a mother for the first time.

Today, our entire team is seeing a happy family off as they head home. Nariman Kamilyevich Sadykov, General Director of Caravan-Medicus LLP, warmly thanked the couple for choosing our clinic and wished the new parents good health and harmony:

— The doors of our clinic are always open to this wonderful family, and we would be very happy to see them again!
